Alabama Law Foundation Receives ABA Grass Roots Advocacy Award (05/15/2009)

L-R -- ABA President Tommy Wells presents ABA Grass Roots Advocacy Award to Alabama Law Foundation Executive Director Tracy Daniel and vice president Dave Boyd.

The Alabama Law Foundation received the “Grassroots Advocacy Award” from the American Bar Association (ABA). American Bar Association President Tommy Wells presented the award on April 22, 2009 during “ABA Day” in Washington, DC. During ABA Day, members of the American Bar Association from across the United States met with government leaders to strongly advocate for support for legal services for underserved citizens. Participants in ABA day from across the United States witnessed the presentation at an evening Capitol Hill reception at the James Madison Memorial Building of the Library of Congress. Tracy Daniel, Executive Director of the Alabama Law Foundation; Dave Boyd, Vice President of the Alabama Law Foundation; and Ted Hosp, Chairman of the Access to Justice Commission, received the award on behalf of the Alabama Law Foundation.

The Alabama Law Foundation was honored with the “Grassroots Advocacy Award” in recognition of the foundation’s work with the ABA’s Governmental Affairs staff to get IOLTA (Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts) accounts fully covered by FDIC deposit insurance. In 2008, FDIC coverage was a critical issue involving Alabama’s mandatory IOLTA program. Senators Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby and Congressmen Spencer Bachus and Artur Davis played leadership roles in gaining the coverage and thus protecting mandatory IOLTA. The mandatory IOLTA program has greatly increased support for civil legal services for underserved Alabama citizens and thus greatly improved a basic tenet of democracy—access to justice for all citizens.

Tracy Daniel stated that receiving the award was “a great honor made special by being presented by American Bar Association President and Alabama State Bar member Tommy Wells during ABA day in Washington, DC.” Daniel continued “the award represents a lot of hard work by a lot of people committed to IOLTA and access to justice for all of Alabama’s citizens.”
