Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship

Justice Janie Shores The Justice Janie L. Shores Scholarship is awarded to one or more female Alabama residents attending an Alabama law school. The Alabama Law Foundation and the Woman’s Section of the Alabama State Bar established the Justice L. Shores Scholarship, named in honor of the first female Alabama Supreme Court Justice.

Mary Margaret Bailey, chairwoman of the Women’s Section of the Alabama State Bar, explained “the Women’s Section of the State Bar wanted to do something positive to benefit women lawyers in Alabama. A scholarship seemed to be the perfect vehicle for accomplishing this because it would not only help women entering the profession, but also unite women already in the profession.”

Justice Shores was elected to Alabama’s highest court in 1974. The Women’s Section of the State Bar chose to honor Justice Shores because she has accomplished so many groundbreaking achievements in the legal field and has been such a great role model for the women who have followed in her footsteps.
