Introduction

Welcome to the Alabama Law Foundation’s online grant application. The grant application process begins with the submission of an online grant application. The foundation awards IOLTA grants in three categories:

  • Programs that provide free legal aid to the poor in civil cases
  • Projects to improve the administration of justice
  • Law related education
  • 80% of grants are to groups that provide civil legal aid to the poor. All grants funded by the Alabama Law Foundation are wholly discretionary and do not imply that a program will receive funds for the next grant cycle. Grants are awarded in December of each year. The deadline for submitting applications is October 15.

    Guidelines

    Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to receive funds from the IOLTA program, an applicant must be a 501(c)(3) charitable organization or the project must be for a 501(c)(3) eligible purpose. Individuals may not submit grant applications.

The foundation will only award grants for the provision of legal aid to the poor to programs that provide services to individual clients or families at or below 125% of federal poverty level.

Committees and Task Forces of the Alabama State Bar must have the approval of the Board of Bar Commissioners prior to submission of a grant application. Grant applications will not carry over from one grant cycle to the next.

Do not submit any document not specifically requested. If necessary, the foundation will request additional information. If a question is clearly not applicable to your organization, indicate so by typing N/A in the space provided.

A new application must be submitted each time an organization applies for IOLTA funds.

    Grant Application Hints

Create a user name and password. User ID’s are deleted following each year’s grant cycle, so you will need to create a user name every year you apply for an application. This does not mean that you cannot use the same user ID and password every year, just that you need to create your User ID every year.

Required fields are designated by a red asterisk. You will probably find it helpful to compose your answers to the grant questions in your favorite word processing program (Word, WordPerfect, etc.). Spell check your work and then paste your responses into the appropriate field. A number of fields have a limit in the number of characters that may be entered in them. If you try to type more characters than the field allows, the program will not allow you to submit your application.

Click the Save button at the bottom of the application often to save your work. Once you click the Submit button you cannot make any more changes to your application.

Before clicking the Submit button, be sure to upload your financial information spreadsheet. Before uploading your financial information or case statistics forms, be sure you have included the name of your organization in your file name when you saved it to your computer. Do not, under any circumstances, upload the file using the default file name.

When you complete your application and click the Submit button, it will give you a button to click to print the Grant Assurances so that you may sign it and mail it to the foundation. You will also be given the option to print and application to save for your records.
