The Alabama Law Foundation—Making a Difference

Who We Are

The Alabama Law Foundation strives to make access to justice in Alabama a reality for all Alabama citizens. The Alabama Law Foundation is the only 501(c )(3) statewide organization that supports programs providing civil legal aid to the poor.

The Alabama Law Foundation helps hard-working individuals and families with incomes too low to provide basic needs, let alone handle a crisis. For many, a simple, legal procedure can become a daunting obstacle.

  • A grandmother needed adoption papers for her grandchildren after her daughter died so that the children could register for school.
  • A disabled woman needed help with a contractor that took her money and left her roof leaking.
  • An elderly cancer patient needed confusing issues between doctors and Medicaid authorization resolved before he could receive life-saving medication.

Through legal aid and volunteer lawyer programs, the Alabama Law Foundation works to meet the need for civil legal assistance for low-income Alabamians.

A charitable, tax-exempt organization affiliated with the Alabama State Bar, the Alabama Law Foundation receives funds from the interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA) Program and uses those funds for law-related charitable projects that support the foundation’s mission.

Lawyers from across Alabama participate in the Alabama Law Foundation. The foundation acknowledges that lawyers contribute a valuable service to society by devoting their lives to the study and practice of law. Recognizing that lawyers make their living from the legal system, the Alabama Law Foundation provides ways for Alabama lawyers to give something back and better the world around them. Their service and commitment to a just society help the foundation meet its objective.

The Alabama Law Foundation marks its twentieth anniversary in 2007. The anniversary is a time to reflect and look forward. Since its inception, the foundation has grown and accomplished much; however, much remains to be done. Continued and increased support is needed for the foundation to make a difference in society by assisting young students in furthering their academic pursuits, acknowledging service and commitment, providing new leadership opportunities, and strengthening democracy by making justice available to all citizens regardless of income.
