Alabama Law Foundation

Cabaniss, Johnston Scholarship: Application

Cabaniss, Johnston, Gardner, Dumas & O’Neal is distinguished as having one of the oldest law practices in Alabama. The firm traces its origins to Cabaniss & Banks, which began practice in Birmingham in 1887. A merger in 1920 produced Cabaniss, Johnston, Cocke & Cabaniss, and “Cabaniss, Johnston” has been a familiar and respected name in Alabama legal circles ever since.

Cabaniss, Johnston established the scholarship in 1987 to commemorate the entrance of the firm into its second century. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or more law students entering their second year at any accredited law school in the United States.

Only Alabama residents are eligible for scholarships.

Applicants for a scholarship should be in all respects superior. While academic achievement will be the key factor, consideration will also be given to factors such as conscientiousness, dependability, civic involvement, financial need and dedication to the highest ethical standards.

The first place scholarship will cover tuition and books for the second year of law school, to a maximum of $5,000. A second place scholarship of $1,000 may be awarded at the committee’s discretion. The recipients of the scholarships agree that the firm will be entitled to receive information on academic performance.
